Modern Girl refers to women who led a modern lifestyle that emerged from the late Taisho (1912-1926) to the
early Showa period (1926-1989). In an era when a new popular culture was flourishing, these women who enjoyed
cutting-edge fashion, makeup, and entertainment, and who were independent with their own jobs, were icons
symbolizing the arrival of a new era, and continue to captivate the hearts of people even today.
The exhibition is held in seven rooms of this cultural property based on the theme of "Modern Girls and Modern
Tokyo," and will showcase the urban culture enjoyed by these Modern Girls.
Once you step inside this cultural property, you will find yourself immersed in a world of Modern Tokyo with its
glittering and slightly decadent atmosphere, including perfumes and cosmetics of the time, bars where the most
sophisticated men and women enjoyed drinks, and literary works that symbolize Taisho decadence.
The exhibition also features works by Yumeji Takehisa, marking the 140th anniversary of his birth and the 90th
anniversary of his death in 2024, as well as Modern Girl paintings by Kaichi Kobayashi, a leading figure in Kyoto
Art Deco, which will be exhibited for the first time at the Hyakudan Kaidan cultural property.
Enjoy a trip back in time to the glamorous Taisho romantic era and Showa-modern imperial capital of Tokyo, where
you can stroll through the streets of Tokyo's historic architecture.
