We Japanese enjoy viewing cherry blossoms blowing in the spring wind; and in summer, searching for coolness, we display green leaves; while in the fall we place a maple leaf in our letters; and in winter we forget the passage of time as we view snow-blanketed landscapes.
To explain, by placing seasonal branches and flowers into containers, we experience and appreciate the changing of the seasons. We feel the calmness of nature around us and our souls are put to ease when we have finished making our arrangements.
Ikebana art, a traditional Japanese culture dating back to ancient times, is the result of the unique Japanese way of feeling and thinking, their love of nature and beauty, and appreciation of Japanese customs.
As far back as a thousand years ago, The Pillow Book (Makura no Soshi) featured characters who placed cherry branches into vessels and stood back to appreciate them. As well, presenting an offering of flowers to god and Buddha is an ages old homage. In these many ways, ikebana art is an important part of our lives.
Public Interest Incorporated Foundation Japan Ikebana Art Association, whose members are well-known Japanese ikebana artists in Japan, was founded in 1966. Its purpose is to promote the spread of ikebana art through ikebana exhibitions and workshops.
We invite you to enjoy these works of ikebana.
